Castellabate's beaches

Castellabate's sea is among the most beautiful in the Cilento: the stretch of coast from Punta Tresino to Punta Licosa has been a marine protected area since 2009, with clear water, fine sand and rocky shores covered in Mediterranean scrub.

From Ca' del Borgo, in Ogliastro Cilento, Santa Maria di Castellabate is about a 25-minute drive. Here are the beaches worth knowing, from the easiest to the wildest.

Practical tips

  • In August, set off early: in Santa Maria the car parks near the sea fill up during the morning.
  • For Punta Licosa, bring water, a hat and lunch: there are no facilities on the headland.
  • This is a marine protected area: no spearfishing, and anchoring only where allowed.
  • In the afternoon, go up to the old village of Castellabate: the sunset from the viewpoint is worth the trip.

The beaches

Where to swim in Castellabate

Santa Maria di Castellabate

  • Sand
  • Seafront
  • Beach clubs and free beach

The heart of Castellabate's seaside: a long sandy beach below the promenade, with the little fishing harbour, beach clubs and long stretches of free beach. The water is shallow and clear: it's the easiest choice for families with children, with bars and restaurants a few steps away.

San Marco di Castellabate

  • Harbour
  • Rocks and sand

The fishing village north of Santa Maria, gathered around its harbour. The beaches are smaller, a mix of sand and rocks, and the sea is great for swimming and snorkelling. In the evening the harbour comes alive with seafood restaurants.

Ogliastro Marina

  • Francesco's favourite
  • Crystal-clear water

South of Santa Maria, near Punta Licosa: it's the beach Francesco recommends most, for its spectacular water and relaxed atmosphere. There's free beach and a few beach clubs, such as Lido Sirena.

Punta Licosa

  • Marine protected area
  • Nature
  • On foot or by boat

The wild headland facing the islet of Licosa and its lighthouse. Cars can't get there: you reach it on foot from Ogliastro Marina, through Mediterranean scrub and pine woods, or from the sea. Rocky coves and clear water: bring water, lunch and water shoes.

From the sea

Punta Licosa by boat

The most beautiful way to see this coast is from the water. Submania Agropoli runs trips from Agropoli harbour in small groups of about 10 people: you sail from Trentova Bay past Punta Licosa to Acciaroli, with swimming stops and lunch on board.

A day in Castellabate

Sea, village and sunset

Morning at the beach in Ogliastro Marina or Santa Maria, afternoon in the old village of Castellabate among lanes and viewpoints, a sunset aperitivo at the Cliff Bar and dinner at Lo Sparviero or Bonora. In 25 minutes you're back in the quiet of the hills.
